AHF Active Power Filter is a quality solution for power quality problems such as harmonics, reactive power and three-phase load imbalance. The APF in parallel with the power grid can detect the harmonics in the power grid in time, generate the reverse phase compensation current through the converter, and dynamically filter out the harmonics in the power grid.
The operation of APF is not affected by various load forms and grid structures. And does not produce harmonic oscillation (resonance) with the system, so as to achieve harmonic control under diverse loads. Active power filter can fully realize dynamic reactive power compensation, control capacitor switching, and finally improve the power factor of the power grid. At the same time, APF has the function of controlling the current imbalance of three-phase load, so as to comprehensively deal with various power quality problems .
Active Harmonic Filters (AHFs) and Passive Harmonic Filters (PHFs) are two methods used to reduce harmonic distortion in power systems. AHFs uses a real-time closed-loop control system to detect and neutralize harmonics, effectively cancels them out by injecting antiphase harmonic currents that are in phase opposite to existing harmonics, providing precise harmonic suppression, real-time correction, improved power factor, reduced equipment stress, and possible cost savings in the long term, despite higher initial costs. They are widely used in industrial facilities, data centers, commercial buildings, renewable energy facilities, and wastewater treatment plants. In contrast, PHFs consists of passive components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors that provide a low-impedance path for harmonic currents, thereby reducing harmonic distortion. They are generally more economical, have low maintenance requirements, and are simple to install, but have limited performance, are fixed to a specific frequency, and may introduce voltage drops. Overall, AHFs is more advanced, adaptable and suitable for dynamic and complex environments, but has a higher initial cost; While PHFs is simpler and more cost-effective for harmonic suppression at fixed frequencies, it is less flexible and may not adapt to changes in system conditions.
Active power filter can improve the reliability of power grid and reduce the operating cost by reducing the harmonic level. The harmful tripping of protective devices and the harmful removal of fuses caused by harmonic thermal effect motors, transformers, switching devices and cables are greatly reduced. Equipment is also overheating less, which increases their life expectancy and reduces maintenance costs. For new installations, over-sized distribution equipment can be reconsidered to reduce harmonic sensitivity.
